Landscapes at risk
Landscapes at risk promotes the preservation and adaptation of sites under the threat
of man induced environmental changes, such as development, expropriation and climate change. Landscape is a broadly used term here in order to express an investigation including not only the artifact and its surrounding environment but also a variety of vulnerable built environments, ranging from areas of cultural identification, that people wish to preserve, to areas that already have a recognized heritage status. The aim is to show how design can act as a |
mediating and healing force in the definition of preventive action plans that contribute to the management of our built-up and natural resources in a sustainable way.
I am currently developing a research project titled Water Wise Landscapes (WWL) focused on water-vulnerable environments and on how these respond to resilient approaches. Explorations are theoretical, methodological and empirical. Located along or crossed by waterbodies, the sites include former industrial areas, heritage sites, urban waterfronts, etc. |
The Water Wise Landscapes mission is to develop knowledge, innovation and education to build a culture of prevention and mitigation. In this perspective, the synergy between research and education increases our understanding of how heritage & design can strengthen the society awareness of climate change (in the specific case). On the other hand, heritage and design play an effective role in shaping (water) vulnerable environments while preserving them.
